Let's face it - it's tough to find the motivation to get out and exercise especially when it's cold outside. While weekend sunshine is appreciated, it doesn't do much to warm up our wintry surroundings. But before you decide against putting your trainers on and heading out the door, it may be worth giving the idea of a winter workout a second thought.
Take a look at some of the 𝐁𝐢𝐠 𝐁𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐭𝐬 when training in the cold!
𝗬𝗼𝘂'𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝘂𝗿𝗻 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 💪 As your body works hard to regulate the core temperature you'll burn more calories, during those colder workouts compared to ones indoors!
𝗬𝗼𝘂'𝗹𝗹 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘁 ❤️ Colder weather also makes your heart work harder to distribute blood around your body. As a regular exerciser with cardiovascular endurance, you can help make your heart muscle even stronger and preparing the body for more strenuous workouts in the future.
𝗬𝗼𝘂'𝗹𝗹 𝗱𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 💦 Your body will still sweat when exercising in the cold, it evaporates much quicker into the chilly, dry air, making it seem as though your body is losing less water. Drinking water before, during, and after cold-weather workouts helps to maintain peak performance, protect the body from injury, and stay warm from start to finish. Don't wait to feel thirsty to hydrate!
𝗬𝗼𝘂'𝗹𝗹 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗱 🥶 It can feel like a right chore to force yourself out into the elements for the first workout of the winter season, but it does get easier. Pay particular attention to the amount of effort you're putting forth rather than hitting a certain time, distance or other performance goals, and try to just enjoy the process.
𝗬𝗼𝘂'𝗹𝗹 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗮 𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗺 𝘂𝗽 & 𝗰𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝗱𝗼𝘄𝗻 🧘🏼♂️ Your body will still sweat when exercising in the cold, it evaporates much quicker into the chilly, dry air, making it seem as though your body is losing less water. 𝗠𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝘆𝗼𝘂'𝗹𝗹 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗱. 💥 Cold-weather exercise also has the ability to boost your mood, thanks to the lack of humidity and the stimulating aspect of the chill. As the body works harder to stay warm, the amount of endorphins produced also increases, leaving you with a stronger sense of happiness and lightness following a workout in the cold.
